A puppy has been found abandoned at the roadside along with a note on how to care for her.

The SSPCA is investigating after a member of the public spotted the little dog inside a cage in Humbie, East Lothian, on Sunday.

The white female Maltese terrier is now being cared for at the charity’s centre in Balerno.

Inspector Emma Phillips said: “Lola is a very healthy wee puppy who was left along with a letter which talks about her feeding routine.

“From reading it, it looks like whoever owned Lola has cared for her, which makes it difficult to understand why they would do this to her.

“We understand that it can be very difficult at times to care for a pet due to changes in personal circumstances, but there is no excuse for abandoning an animal.

“If anyone recognises Lola we’d urge them to get in touch with us on 03000 999 999.

“We’ll look after Lola until we can find her a loving new home.”
