Race-hate murderer is attacked in prison

The ringleader of a gang convicted of abducting and murdering a teenager in a race-hate attack has been assaulted in Saughton prison.

Imran Shahid, 34, was jailed in November 2006, along with his brother Zeeshan Shahid and Mohammed Mushtaq, for the murder of 15-year-old Kriss Donald, who was stabbed 13 times and set on fire while he was still alive.

The schoolboy was kidnapped while walking with a friend near his home in Pollokshields, Glasgow, in March 2004. He was set on fire on a quiet walkway behind Celtic FC’s training ground in the east end of the city.

The three men fled to Pakistan after committing the crime but were extradited to Britain after co-operation between police and politicians in both countries.

Shahid, serving a minimum of 25 years behind bars, was attacked last night by another prisoner at Saughton jail in Edinburgh. He is understood to have sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Shahid is said to have been moved to HM Prison Edinburgh recently, from Shotts Prison in North Lanarkshire.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Prison Service said: “We can confirm an incident took place yesterday evening at Edinburgh. Those involved were treated locally and no one was taken to hospital.”

Zeeshan Shahid, who was 28 at the time of conviction, was sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison and Mushtaq, who was 27 at the time, must spend 22 years behind bars before being able to apply for parole.

The kidnapping and subsequent killing was described as “savage and barbaric” by the judge presiding over the trial.
