Residents flee flat fire at Abbeyhill

RESIDENTS were forced to evacuate their homes after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Abbeyhill.

Firefighers were called to Sunnybank Terrace in Abbeyhill just before 9pm, where a blaze had taken hold in a second- floor flat of a four-storey building.

Crews used six breathing apparatus and a high-pressure hose reel to put out the flames.

A search-and-rescue team continued to search the second and third floors, and the residents were evacuated.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue team said: “We were searching and ventilating the flat and also in the third floor flats above that.

Residents were evacuated but the incident does not indicate how many. All persons were accounted for.”
