Restaurant worker held by throat

Have your say

A WORKER at a Chinese restaurant found a colleague who had called for help lying on the floor while a man lay on top of him with his hands around his throat.

Thomas Conington admitted assaulting Jasper Lin in the Kwei Lin restaurant, Hunterfield Road, Gorebridge, on Tuesday.

He was jailed for eight months at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

Fiscal Depute, Bruce Macrosson, told Sheriff William Holligan that Conington had entered the restaurant and asked to use the bathroom.

Mr Lin told him he could not, as it was for customers only. Conington replied “Are you sure?” and when Mr Lin answered “Yes, of course”, Conington grabbed him by the throat and pushed him to the floor. The police were called.

Defence agent, Charles Morrison, said his client was unemployed and lived in a hostel in The Pleasance.

He had little recollection of the incident as he was heavily under the influence of alcohol.

Sheriff Holligan told Conington he reduced the sentence from 12 months due to the guilty plea.
