Road closed as fire crews battle blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were this morning tackling a fierce fire that had spread from a rubbish tip to a derelict building.

The blaze, directly behind the derelict Callyr Inn, on Straiton Road, Loanhead, was spotted by a passer-by at around 10pm last night. Around ten firefighters were still battling the fierce flames at 8am this morning.

A large amount of billowing smoke led officers to close off the A701 road heading to Penicuik.

The fire was made more complicated as there were gas cylinders in the rubbish tip.

Meanwhile, two cars were destroyed by vandals at Upper Craigour, near the ERI, after they were deliberately set alight.
