Road safety event aims to cut casualties

A ROAD safety event aimed at reducing the number of young driver casualties on Lothian roads is under way.

The public services partnership group, which promotes the City of Edinburgh Road Safety Plan under the banner of Safer Streets, is hosting the event.

Officers from Lothian and Borders Police have joined forces with the city council and Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, as well as a host of other agencies, at the five-day event in the Edinburgh Corn Exchange.

The event started yesterday and will be attended by 2500 S6 pupils from Edinburgh who have just gained or are looking to gain their licence.

Superintendent David Carradice said: “In 2010, young drivers accounted for 23 per cent of all road casualties in Edinburgh, and are more likely to cause injury to others than drivers in other age groups.”
