A LUCKY roofer is celebrating scooping £1 million in the lottery after buying his winning ticket on a last-minute whim.

John Edmond, 32, from Port Seton, will now be jetting off for an exotic two-week holiday in Bali, Thailand or the Maldives with wife Amanda, 31, and their two young daughters.

Working is all I have ever known . We are busy just now so I am hoping to carry on

But the newly declared millionaire revealed he will still have to ask his boss for time off work – after he decided not to give up the day job at Midlothian Roofing Services.

Down-to-earth John, who has worked as a roofer since he was 16, said he just wasn’t ready to pack the trade in – despite his newfound wealth.

He said: “Working is all I have ever really known and we are really busy just now so I am hoping to carry on working at least until we get our heads around everything that has happened.

“Stuart Hill and the guys at Midlothian Roofing have been great to me over the years and I want to pay them back for that by staying on – here’s hoping he will let me have time off for the holiday though.”

The lucky couple found themselves rolling in dough after their numbers came up in the EuroMillions Mega Friday draw last week. And despite John’s decision to keep his job, the pair are ready to change their lives forever. John – a regular National Lottery player – only purchased his EuroMillions ticket at the McColl’s store in Dalkeith after he got his days mixed up and was too late for the Wednesday draw.

Disappointed that he might have missed his chance at the big time, he decided to try his luck with a EuroMillions ticket instead – and the rest is history. The dumbstruck dad revealed that he was so shocked when his numbers came up that he and Amanda couldn’t sleep.

Now the family have grand plans to enjoy their “private pool escape” dream holiday – included as part of their winnings – and move into a bigger house, swapping their modest two-bed for a home big enough for all four of them.

And unlike her husband, Amanda has already given up her job as a customer advisor at BBQ.

John said: “This is absolutely life-changing for us and neither Amanda nor I slept a wink on Saturday night when we realised we had won the money and the holiday.

“Going to somewhere like the Maldives could only have been a dream ambition up to now, but this allows us to give ourselves and our two girls the trip of a lifetime and we will try and get it all arranged soon.

“On top of that, the money will allow us to move out of our current two-bedroom house, where the girls share a room, into one where they will each have their own bedroom and that, again ,was only an ambition until now.

“We will also be looking to upgrade our old Nissan Qashqai.”

The couple, who have now had their claim validated, gave their new lifestyle a trial run yesterday as they soaked up the luxury on offer at the exclusive Marine Villa at Archerfield House in North Berwick.

The EuroMillions Mega Friday draw takes place on the last Friday of every month, with £1 million up for grabs, as well as a once-in-a-life-time prize to kickstart the winner’s life of leisure.

Lottery players raise more than £34m every week for projects across the UK – with 842 grants distributed in East Lothian alone to date.
