Safety warning for Diwali celebrations

West Lothian residents are being warned to stay safe as they celebrate Diwali, the festival of light for Hindus and Sikhs.

Diwali, which begins tomorrow and lasts until Thursday, traditionally sees an increase in use of candles and fireworks to mark the event, as well as extra cooking and entertaining.

Residents have been urged to ensure smoke detectors are working, to keep candles and other naked flames out of the reach of children or pets, and away from clothes, hair, curtains and other flammable
fabrics and furniture and to take care with fireworks.

Inspector Michaela Kerr, from the West Lothian Community Safety Unit, said: “Diwali is a time for celebration for many West Lothian residents, and we want make sure nothing spoils the party.”
