The news was part of a double blow for coach John Dalziel as it emerged Northampton centre Rory Hutchinson will miss the rest of the competition too after he sustained an ankle injury.

World Rugby regulations state a player of Graham’s age cannot return to play within 23 days of a concussion. The Hawick wing’s magnificent try was the highlight of Scotland’s 15-10 over the Aussies in Salford. Hutchinson was on course to become Scotland’s most-capped player at under-20 level during the tournament. He is currently on 23, one behind Jamie Farndale’s record of 24.

Reuben Norville and Lewis Berg, of Hartpury College and George Watson’s College respectively, will join the squad as replacements.

Scotland face England in their second Pool B match tomorrow.
