Abellio – which will take over the ScotRail franchise from FirstGroup on April 1 – was ranked second from last for value-for-money fares at its Greater Anglia franchise, which scored a 37 per cent approval rating.

The Dutch operator was also criticised in the latest Passenger Focus poll for onboard space, toilet facilities and staff availability.

The poll is produced by the consumer watchdog every six months where they asked 27,000 passengers what they thought of their most recent journey.

Abellio won the franchise for ScotRail from FirstGroup in October on a ten-year contract.

It also announced it would move its UK headquarters to Scotland this year.
