Ryan Randall, 30, who had come all the way from Las Vegas, led the march which set off at 11am this morning, and was joined by ‘Yes’ campaigner Derek Durkin, 58, who used a loudspeaker to encourage people to come out and join the march to Craigmillar Libary to cast their vote.

Appearances were also made by local poet Johnni Stanton, who whizzed around in his mobility scooter with Saltires attached and supporters of the four-legged variety including Jack Russel Lulu and mongrel Rufus, dressed in Saltires by owner Kate Macleod.

Mr Durkin said: “We are certainly not planning for a ‘No’ vote - I have never seen anything like this in my life. The engagement of ordinary people in this campaign is absolutely outstanding.”

The organisers have planned two further marches for today, at 3pm and 7pm.
