A SECOND woman has been charged as part of a police probe into claims of physical abuse at a care home.
Three staff members were suspended by Colinton Care Home last month after a whistleblower raised concerns.
A 60-year-old woman was then charged with assault following alleged attacks on a man and a woman in their 80s.
Now a 43-year-old woman has also been charged with assaulting the same two victims.
Another member of staff, who was among those suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, has not been charged but faces the company’s own disciplinary process.
Bosses at Four Seasons Health Care (FSHC), which runs six homes across the Capital, including Colinton through subsidiary firm Brighterkind, said they had co-operated fully with police and that relatives of the 53 elderly residents it houses had been kept informed.
A Police spokeswoman, who confirmed that their investigation had now concluded, said: “Police in Edinburgh have arrested and charged two women, aged 60 and 43, following the assault of a man and a woman in their 80s in a care home in the south of the city.
“A report will now be submitted to procurator fiscal.”
In a statement on behalf of the home, an FSHC spokesman said: “When one of our carers raised concerns about the conduct of some other members of staff the home manager notified the authorities.
“We also informed relatives of people living in the home.
“Our first consideration is for the wellbeing of the people in our care and we have an active whistleblowing policy that encourages our residents, relatives and staff to raise any concerns they may have about any aspect of care.
“We are grateful to our carer for their vigilance in raising concerns that have led to the investigation.
“The overwhelming majority of nursing and care staff working in care homes are caring and compassionate people who do a demanding job extremely well day after day.
“It is not appropriate to comment further ahead of the conclusion of the legal process.”
FSHC runs 350 care homes across the UK, including Guthrie House in Liberton, Merchiston, Castlegreen in Niddrie, St Margaret’s in Newington and Gilmerton.
