Seven marathons in seven days for fundraising cop

Paul Brown participated in several charity events last year to raise money for two step-brothers who suffer from the same muscle wasting condition.

But now a detective constable from Armadale is set to take on his biggest challenge yet: running seven marathons in seven days.

Paul Brown, 36, met Ben McKenzie and Cameron Stewart in 2014, after he was introduced to their family through a mutual friend.

The boys, who are both ten, have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a rare condition which leaves the youngsters, from Stoneyburn, unable to keep up with their friends due to their muscle weakness.

Within just a few years, it is estimated the boys will be unable to walk.

Symptoms for this rare condition often appear in boys aged between two and three.

When Paul met the step-brothers he knew he wanted to help. Paul said: “The boys touched my heart.

“It’s sad that they are not expected to live beyond their teenage years and they have made a bucket list of things to do while they are still able. I want to make as many of these wishes come true as I can.”

Last year, Paul participated in the Strathearn Marathon, Kinlock Rannoch Marathon, River Ayr Way Ultra Marathon, the Great Scottish Swim and the Jedburgh Three Peaks Ultra-Marathon to raise money for Ben and Cameron.

But now, he’s ready to take on an even tougher challenge, and will begin six pre-planned routes around central Scotland – all longer than 26.2 miles – starting on May 23 to raise money for three charities.

He’ll finish with a seventh run on May 29, when he takes on the Edinburgh Marathon.

Overall, Paul hopes to raise about £4000, which will be distributed evenly between three charities – The Tree Club, SANDS Lothians and Fund a Wish Foundation – as well as the stepbrothers.

Paul said: “I’m really nervous about the challenge I’ve set myself, but I hope I can help the boys revisit Australia as that’s one of the things they’d really like to do.

“It’ll be great to finish with the Edinburgh Marathon and hopefully Ben and Cameron will be in the crowds.”

Sheryl Stewart, the boys’ mum, said the family was “overwhelmed” with Paul’s generosity. She said: “The five events last year were challenging enough, never mind seven marathons in seven days.

“We just can’t thank Paul enough, what he has done for us is priceless, we are so overwhelmed by his generosity. He puts his own life on hold to train for our boys.”

Following his events last year, Paul raised £900 and won two medals – which he gave to Ben and Cameron.
