A WOMAN was subjected to a serious sexual assault in a Lothian town while heading home after a night out.

Police are appealing for information following the attack on the 27-year-old victim, which happened in Dalkeith at around 3.45am this morning.

The woman had left a bus on Lauder Road, near to Primrose Crescent, and was walking towards Wester Kippielaw Drive when she was approached by a man who then forced her into a wooded area between Lauder Road and Wester Kippielaw Drive.

He is described as white, aged approximately 20, around 5ft 7inches tall and with a very slim build.

He has short dark hair and was wearing tight fitted jeans with a shiny black-hooded top.

It is thought the man may have been at a local nightclub earlier in the evening and had possibly been thrown out.

Police are also keen to speak with two men who were seen walking separately along Lauder Road towards Mayfield at around the time of this incident.

Detective Sergeant Alistair Sellar from Police Scotland, said: “This was an horrendous ordeal for a woman to go through and we are very keen to trace the suspect as quickly as possible.

“A full investigation into this incident is now underway and I would like to reassure the local community that officers are doing everything they can to ensure this man is found.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
