Shakespeare’s reputation on shaky ground

A LEADING Edinburgh University academic is set to reignite theories that William Shakespeare did not write his own plays as part of a public speech in the Capital today.

Professor Christopher Carr, from the institution’s business school, will claim the name of one of the world’s most favourite playwrights was merely a pseudonym for another author. The talk being held at the university is entitled “Were the works of Shakespeare his own or was he just an astute businessman?”.

Prof Carr and colleague Robert Ayres of global business school INSEAD will argue the bard would have had no time to produce his great works while managing his business interests.

They will revisit old claims that Shakespeare was merely a front for contemporary Christopher Marlowe. The theory suggests Marlowe’s death in 1593 was faked, allowing his work to continue to be published under the name Shakespeare.
