Reader Jean Campbell Spinner, who took the picture of the mess in Princes Gardens, said: “I was appalled at such a disgraceful sight in out capital.”

She called on the council to do more to tackle the issue as the hot weather is set to continue.

In a letter copied in to Edinburgh Council’s environmental health department, she said: “Either put more bins out or have the existing ones emptied more often...or do we have to wait for the hordes at the Festival for the council to provide more litter pick ups?

“I was with two visitors to Edinburgh when we saw this. I was so ashamed of our council, which is proving so complacent as to accept this mess in such a lovely public park and on its doorstep.”

Edinburgh Council has been approached for a comment.
