Sick Kids fundraisers with a head for heights tackle trek

A TEAM of volunteers is set to hike to the summit of Ben Nevis in a sponsored trek to raise money for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation (SKFF).

Among this year’s fundraisers, and taking part for the second year, is Steve Brydon. His daughter Daniella was first admitted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh last July.

Steve, who lives in Roseburn, was horrified when Daniella, who is now 18 months old, was rushed to the hospital after having a high fever and seizures caused by a viral infection.

She was found to be suffering from febrile convulsions and was kept in for five days while doctors and nurses worked around the clock, carrying out brain and heart scans to ensure she had not contracted any other more serious conditions, such as meningitis.

Steve signed up to the SKFF challenge to climb Ben Nevis in September last year and was first in line to volunteer for this year’s hike.

The team will set off from nearby Fort William on October 5 to hike to the summit – 4408ft above sea level.

The trek is expected to take eight hours.
