Sir Tom Farmer has hand-prints taken ahead of Edinburgh Award

EDINBURGH entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Tom Farmer has been getting ready to become the ninth recipient of the Edinburgh Award.

Like previous recipients, Sir Tom has had a cast of his hand-prints taken by local Edinburgh stonemason Nic Boyes. The hand-prints will be carved onto a flagstone outside the City Chambers, where they will sit alongside those of previous Edinburgh Award recipients.

Friends and family will join the Lord Provost at a special ceremony on Friday 4 March, when the flagstone will be unveiled and Sir Tom Farmer will be presented with a certificate and an engraved Loving Cup.

The Leith-born 75 year-old was chosen from a short-list of nominations cast by the Edinburgh public in December. He began his career at 15 at a local tyre firm before famously founding one of Europe’s largest and best known automotive repair businesses, Kwik Fit.

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, Donald Wilson, said: “The Edinburgh Award enables Edinburgh’s people to pay a lasting tribute to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the city. Sir Tom is a great ambassador for Edinburgh and I look forward to seeing his hand-prints laid in stone at the City Chambers.”
