Smokers’ groups kick habit

MORE than 60 smoking support groups across the Lothians have helped 12,000 people kick the habit in the past three years, health chiefs have said.

A combination of NHS support and various organisations have helped achieve that target, which should have a positive affect on future health statistics.

Public health director Dr Alison McCallum said: “NHS Lothian has clear outcome targets set by the Scottish Government and is on track to achieve them. The number of groups offered across NHS Lothian has increased to 60 per week to meet demand and provide a fast response to referrals. Subsequently, the number of referrals, and their success, has increased significantly.”
