Snow warning for Edinburgh and Lothians

A LAYER of snow could coat Edinburgh and the Lothians overnight as an area of low pressure sweeps across central Scotland.

Forecasters have issued a Yellow Warning across much of the lowlands - with some parts of the borders expecting heavy snowfall.

Experts warned traffic could be disrupted as the snow lasts into the morning rush hour, before melting away as temperatures rise in the afternoon.

But they insisted Edinburgh would be spared the worst of the wintery gusts, with only areas above 300m expecting deep snow.

Around 3 to 6cm of snow is expected to fall overnight - with as much as 10cm expected on higher ground.

A Met Office spokeswoman said the weather would be brought in by a complex area of low pressure tracking into the cold air across the UK.

She said: “There’s likely to be some disruption to travel, so people should take steps to make sure their journeys are safe.

“During the day tomorrow it should start to clear. Tomorrow will be a little bit above freezing in Edinburgh, at around 2C.”

She added that as the cold weather continued there was a risk of frost on Thursday night into Friday.
