Standard Life worker admits fraud

A FORMER Standard Life worker has admitted embezzling £20,000.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday heard Kevin Gillon, 29, took the cash to pay for a personal debt.

Fiscal depute Iain Batho told the court: “The accused had been in employment with Standard Life since 1999 and in his last three years of service this role involved the transfer of money between customers’ pension accounts.

“On June 1 this year he handed in his resignation and offered no explanation for this. On June 9 a senior financial crimes investigator became aware of a transaction of £20,000 from a suspense account to a personal account.”

Mr Batho added that Gillon was interviewed by the investigator and fully admitted that he had transferred the money.

Gillon, of Broomhouse Grove, pled guilty to embezzling £20,000 while employed at Standard Life in the Intermediary Services Department on May 30 this year.

The court heard just under £15,000 has been repaid and a monthly repayment scheme for the rest has been set up. Sheriff Isabella McColl deferred sentence until next month.
