Here’s a timeline of events and everything we know so far.

* Initially reported on Thursday January 11: A team of explosives experts carried out a controlled detonation on the package at around 8.10pm on Thursday – around three hours after the alarm was first raised.

* The package – contained in an unmarked brown shoe box – was discovered by chance in a shelter on Princes Street Gardens by a park ranger - The Gardens remained closed on Friday January 12 as police investigated

* A “Gold” meeting of senior commanders decided to extend the parameters of the investigation and call in specialist support to conduct a sweep of the area and trawl CCTV for the identity of whoever left the package.

* Police informed residents to “be alert but not alarmed”.

* Police launch appeal for information on February 21. Initially thought to be an “elaborate hoax” when found on January 11, police reveal box had “potential to cause injury” and that the box contained an “explosive device”

* Terrorism expert said it was unlikely to be part of any organised or sophisticated attack on the city.

* “Extensive” investigation is ongoing with police confirming the package is undergoing further tests but refusing to give further details about its contents and capability.

* Police urge public to “remain vigilant, be alert not alarmed, and to report anything suspicious to police.”
