Suzanne Pilley murder: Filming of David Gilroy ‘is not precedent’

FILMING of David Gilroy being sentenced for the murder of Suzanne Pilley will not lead to cameras becoming a common sight in courts, judges have said.

The hearing on Wednesday is to be televised after an application was approved earlier this week by Scotland’s top judge, the Lord President and Lord Justice General, Lord Hamilton. Permission has also been granted for journalists to use Twitter during the sentencing.

Elizabeth Cutting, the head of judicial communications for the Judiciary of Scotland, insisted that judges would not be influenced by public and media pressure to increase TV coverage of the courts.

She said: “This type of court situation presents a low risk to the administration of justice and it is that that will be the deciding factor in any future requests for access. Control will rest firmly with judges.”
