Teachers to face working hours switch

Teachers will have to stay in school throughout the day and work more flexible hours under proposals in a review published today.

The “chartered teachers” scheme, where staff are paid higher salaries in return for undertaking extra training, would be scrapped and a strict division of time for specific tasks would be dropped.

The McCormac review was set up by the Scottish Government to look at the 2001 McCrone deal on teachers’ pay and conditions.

The report said many teachers work far longer than the set 35-hour week and also longer than their counterparts in most developed countries.

But it added: “We do, however, consider that more flexible management of that time would result in improved outcomes for learners and a better working life for teachers.”

It said the current system of a fixed number of hours for marking, preparation and teaching should be abandoned as “contrary to effective school improvement”.
