AN 18-year-old is due to appear at Edinburgh |Sheriff Court today after being arrested and charged over an alleged sex attack on a girl who escaped by jumping into the Union Canal.

The 15-year-old victim said she was grabbed from behind after she got off a bus at the bridge over the canal at Ratho last Wednesday.

She told police that she managed to struggle free and jumped into the water, remaining there until her attacker ran off.

Officers said the girl had been badly shaken but was otherwise uninjured after her ordeal.

The teenager’s mum said last week: “My daughter is OK. She is being incredibly brave and I hope the police catch the man before he hurts someone.”

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that an 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged incident.
