A WOULD-be thief wearing a trilby was forced to flee empty-handed after being fought off by a shop worker.

A man entered the Appellation Wines, in Comely Bank Road, at around 4pm on Friday and threatened the 28-year-old worker with a metal pole before demanding money.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries, managed to fight off the man, who ran off before she called the police.

Officers are now trying to trace the suspect who is white aged between 50 and 60, around 5ft 8ins with an average build and grey stubble.

He was wearing dark framed glasses, a grey trilby style hat, a black knee-length woollen coat, dark trousers, and dark shirt with a red tie.
