Thousands affected and trams suspended after power cut in west Edinburgh

A major power outage across multiple postcodes caused chaos in the west of Edinburgh.

Residents across several postcodes reported a loss of power at around 4.45pm.

Edinburgh Trams were suspended as a result of the power cut.

A temporary ticket acceptance was put in place for use on Lothian Buses.

At 5.45pm Edinburgh Trams announced that trams were back to running their full route.

Several traffic signal sites were also affected.

Bus routes too were affected. Edinburgh Airport closed to all services, with buses terminating opposite Hilton DoubleTree near the airport.

A ScottishPower spokesman said the firm was alerted just before 5pm to a fault in the Sighthill area of the city.

He said: “Our engineers are working hard to resolve the issue and we will update customers as soon as possible.”

In a tweet, SP Energy Networks confirmed power had been fully restored to the affected postcode areas at 6.55pm.
