Sending the tweet with the caption ‘Scotland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man looking good this morning!’ the astronaut’s image showed eastern Northern Ireland, Scotland (minus the Shetland isles) and the north of England.

Edinburgh appears to be under a bit of cloud but Glasgow and much of the Highlands can be seen in the image.

Major Tim, who is living and working on board the ISS for six months, has followed in the footsteps of predecessor Commander Chris Hadfield, who regularly tweeted photos of Scotland.

Commander Hadfield tweeted images of the Isle of Skye, the north east coast, Loch Lomond and Edinburgh - and Major Tim has been following suit, posting images of the Highlands as well as Edinburgh - where the detail was such that Hibernian’s Easter Road stadium could be seen along with the three Forth crossings and Arthur’s Seat.
