A TODDLER was found wandering the streets at 5am after the couple who should have been looking after him got drunk and passed out in their house.

A motorist spotted the three-year-old in Salters Road, Wallyford, East Lothian, at around 4.50am on February 15.

Prosecutor Brent Bissett told Haddington Sheriff Court: “The driver stopped and put him in the car and immediately contacted the police.

“The boy was dressed only in his pyjamas and brown boots. He was cold and shaking.”

Mr Bissett said when police attended an address occupied by Ian Lugton, 34, and Emma Duffy, 27, they found the front door standing wide open.

He said: “The officers shouted into the property and got no response. They went in and found Duffy sleeping in her bed and detected a strong smell of alcohol. It took a number of minutes to wake her up. Lugton was lying on a couch and there was also a strong smell of alcohol.”

The pair admitted abandoning a child under their supervision while drunk and incapable of looking after him. Sentence was deferred until July 2.
