Town coasts to expensive homes title

North Berwick is the most expensive coastal town in Scotland, according to new research.

According to the Bank of Scotland data, the average house price in the seaside town was £309,676.

St Andrews is second, with homes selling for £277,344.

Nitesh Patel, housing economist at the bank, said: “Seaside towns are still very popular places to live. They offer a unique lifestyle that, for many, can’t be matched elsewhere, with that all-important sea view, together with a high quality of life and a healthy environment.”

The survey shows the number of affordable seaside towns has more than doubled since house prices peaked in 2007.

Last year, there were 28 towns where average house prices were deemed affordable to those on average earnings, compared with just 11 in 2007.

However, that is still down on 2004, when 39 coastal towns were affordable.
