Car left hanging after rolling into railings on Broughton Place

This was the dramatic scene which greeted residents in Broughton Place this morning as a parked car was left hanging precariously after rolling through some railings.

The incident, which happened shortly before midday, saw a blue Audi A8 stuck halfway through some railings opposite the Capital’s Lyon and Turnbull auction house.

Police officers were called to the scene at 11.50am and said no one had been hurt.

It is understood that there was no one in the vehicle at the time, which had been parked outside the auction house but then proceeded to roll backwards.

Professor Gordon Millan, who lives on Broughton Place, said he heard a “crash” when the car went into the railings.

He told the News: “It’s the third occasion where people have parked there and thought they’d put their handbrake on.

“This owner said he was convinced he had put on his electronic handbrake but it didn’t function.

“It’s not happening every week but it’s three times too many as far as I’m concerned.

“I would argue for no parking in front of Lyon and Turnbull because we can see the damage it’s done.

“Fortunately there was no one around otherwise it could have been fatal.”

A recovery vehicle later attended and was able to winch the car out and back onto the road.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, added: “It’s not the kind of thing you expect to see.

“It makes you realise that these railings are not very robust. It’s just unfortunate.”
