Tributes left to cyclist killed in crash with parked car

LOVING tributes have been left at the site of a tragic accident in Blackford which left a 61-year-old cyclist dead after colliding with a parked car.

A tribute has been left at the scene of the crash.

The cyclist was travelling westbound along the residential Charterhall Road towards Morningside when he was involved in the collision with a parked, dark grey Mitsubishi at around 1pm on Friday.

He was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but passed away a short time later, while the road remained shut for almost three hours after the collision.

The man has not yet been named as police continue their inquiries into the accident, however flowers have been attached to the railings next to the site of the collision, with a note bearing the tribute: “A huge piece of our family has been taken away from us.”

“We will miss you so much.”

Local residents described a scene of “panic” on the quiet street in the aftermath of the accident, with one describing the road as “chaos for several hours” following the incident.

Another, who asked not to be identified, said: “I was bringing the kids in from school and we could see all the lights from the ambulances and police cars flashing towards the bottom of the hill.”

“A few of the neighbours were out at the side of the road and a few of them looked distraught. From where we were, it looked like an absolutely horrific incident. I only heard about what happened the next day, but it just sounded absolutely tragic.”

Several local people said the area was a popular route for cyclists, with a number of University of Edinburgh students and staff regularly pedalling along the road to the nearby King’s Buildings campus.

Police have since renewed their appeal for witnesses on social media following the incident.

Sergeant Neil Crozier of the Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with the cyclist’s family at this difficult time and enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision.

“As part of our investigation, we’d urge anyone who may have witnessed this and who has not yet spoken to officers to get in touch as soon as possible.”
