The driver was given three penalty points and a £100 roadside fine. The minimum tread depth for cars is 1.6mm across the centre three-quarters of the tyre, which must be maintained around the whole circumference of the tyre.

The minimum depth for motorbikes is 1mm.

Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing tyres when tread depth has reached 3mm.
