Edinburgh tram staff ‘can’t wait for launch’

THE BOSS of Edinburgh’s new tram line has told how his staff are “champing at the bit” for the service to start running.

General manager Tom Norris, 27, also revealed how the launch of the tram will be a no-frills affair to strike the right balance between marking the occasion and not appearing triumphant.

In an interview with the Evening News, he said he had been pleased by the reaction to the daytime test runs in the city centre. “People seem genuinely interested,” he said.

“We’ve been surprised at the level of attention we’ve been getting. It’s exciting for the staff, they’re champing at the bit to get going.”

From March 17 the depot control room will switch on to a 24 hours, seven days a week operation, with the number of trams on the streets set to grow in the run-up to the launch day.

Mr Norris has taken charge of the trams having previously been in charge of the services through the station built to serve the London 2012 Olympic Park.
