Edinburgh is '˜worst in UK' for parking accidents and fines

Edinburgh has been named as the king of problematic parking following a new study from car inusrance company, Admiral.

According to the study, which used claims of their own as well as analysing council penalty charge notices, Edinburgh has the highest proportion of claims for parking accidents in the UK.

The Capital was also the second highest city (joint second with London) where drivers were likely to pick up a parking ticket.

Only drivers in Brighton and Hove are more likely to get a parking ticket than in the Capital.

Based on analysis of its own car insurance claims as well as analysis of council Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) data,

Analysing claims by Admiral policyholders, the car insurance provider revealed that nearly one in 10 claims made for accidents last year related to parking.

This included drivers hitting a post or barrier while parking or attempting to park, hitting a third party whilst parking or being hit by a third party whilst parked.

Investigating the parking calamities taking place in towns and cities across the UK, Admiral found drivers in Edinburgh were the most likely to make a parking related claim, with 13.2% of all insurance claims for ‘accidents’ in the Scottish capital relating to parking last year.

Drivers in York (13.1%) and Aberdeen (12.9%) had the second and third highest volumes of parking related claims.

The study claimed that there were over 200,000 parking fines issued in the Capital in 2017.

Commenting on the findings, Sabine Williams, head of motor at Admiral, said: “Parking prangs are common car insurance claims accounting for one in ten claims we deal with.

“We’re still a long way from self-parking vehicles and while things like parking sensors can assist with maneuvering tight spaces and can reduce the risk of bumping into something as you park, they certainly aren’t fail safe and they aren’t in every vehicle.

“Our advice to all drivers to avoid both PCNs and parking accidents is to try and plan where you will park in advance and to take your time when maneuvering into and out of parking spaces, especially in older car parks where the bays can be a tight fit for modern vehicles.”
