STEAM trains are set to return to Scotland’s railways as part of a new bid to showcase the country’s stunning scenery.
New ScotRail operator Abellio has revealed it is considering introducing tourist steam trains on a string of routes across Scotland.
The Dutch firm will take over the franchise in April and is thought to be looking at eight routes to revive the era of steam travel.
This includes one between Edinburgh and Inverness, which runs through Highland Perthshire and the Cairngorms and north to Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland.
It is also looking at an Edinburgh to Aberdeen route.
