DAWN MORRISON

TWO men have been accused of sexually assaulting a woman near the city centre while thousands of revellers enjoyed the Festival fireworks.

It is understood the woman at the centre of the alleged incident, which took place at Regent Road Park at around 9.20pm on Sunday while the concert was in full swing, is in her 40s.

Several passers-by reported witnessing a disturbance in the area, which was busy with people watching the fireworks.

Police were contacted by someone who was with the alleged victim at the time of the incident.

The accused, aged 27 and 35, were set to appear in Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

One resident of Regent Terrace, which overlooks the park, said: “When it’s on your doorstep and you have a teenage daughter, it’s very worrying.”

Mohammad Al-Kharfan, 20, said he had witnessed a fight at the park just before the fireworks got under way at 9pm.

He added: “If something was happening in the park that night nobody would have heard, because everyone was walking and talking loudly.”
