University faced Princess Royal protest

EDINBURGH University students planned to disrupt a ceremony to appointing Princess Royal to chancellor by occupying the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, it has emerged.

The protesters, dubbed Party Against Privilege, intended to hijack an open day at the illustrious venue by staging a sit-in this afternoon – just days before Princess Anne’s official inauguration as Chancellor of Edinburgh University.

To stave off the threat, Assembly Hall chiefs are understood to have cancelled their involvement in Doors Open Day and have shut the building to students.

Some students are believed to be angered by the election of Princess Royal, claiming it was a “fait accompli” that sent out an “elitist” image of the university.

Demonstrations outside the General Assembly Hall are still expected to take place during the inauguration ceremony.
