University is ranked 20th best in world

EDINBURGH University has climbed the world rankings, making it one of the top 20 institutions across the globe.

The university is now classed as the 20th top university in the world, two places higher than it was awarded last year in the prestigious survey.

Glasgow also saw a jump from 77th to 59th, although Heriot-Watt’s ranking slipped back from 356th to the 401-450 range.

Cambridge was first for the second year in a row, ahead of Harvard, Yale and Oxford.

Ben Sowter, head of the QS intelligence Unit, which compiled the survey, said: “There is balanced news for Scottish universities in this year’s rankings. Global standards against many of our measures are improving, so a university actually has to get better to stay in the same place. Edinburgh was also ranked 15th in the world for employability, based on a survey of 16,000 students.”
