AN EDINBURGH University student has been selected to represent the UK as secretary of state for foreign affairs to the G8 and G20 Youth Summit in Washington.

Mitch Barltrop, a third-year history student, will travel to America to take up the role next month.

He said: “The summit brings together youths from all member states and representatives of supra-national organisations to discuss the pressing issues that affect young people today.

“The week-long period of intensive negotiations is not a mere simulation, but will produce a policy communiqué to be presented to the G20 leaders in Mexico later this year. It will thereafter be presented to Number 10, where the Youth Cabinet will be able to share their views with the UK government.”
