Veteran’s £5k collection boosts army centre

veteran soldier Tom Gilzean has handed over a four-figure sum to the army’s recovery centre in the Capital after yet another fundraising effort.

Tom was praised by the officer in charge of the centre after presenting a £5000 cheque yesterday.

Major George Connelly said: “Old Tom is renowned as a selfless individual, who can be seen most days on the Royal Mile and in all kinds of weather, collecting for various charities.

“He is one of life’s true gentlemen who has a cracking sense of humour. Tom is an absolute inspiration. We regard him as a true friend and are honoured that he has spent the past two Christmases with our recovering soldiers.”

In December 2010, the Evening News stepped in after council chiefs tried to ban Tom from his collection spot in Castlehill. Days later, the council handed him a licence to continue his big-hearted efforts.
