But now Kirkliston is gaining recognition from across the globe thanks to a website set up for locals to share and celebrate the area’s colourful heritage.

The fans page on Facebook has now attracted almost 400 followers from all corners of the world, despite the fact that it was only set up in the past month.

Its title is Kirkliston – Once Known as Cheestown and it features photographs ranging from decades ago to the present day.

The woman behind the site, resident Agnes Rothney, said: “It’s just really taken off.

“We’ve had people post all kinds of things on it from down the years.

“All this stuff is emerging about the history of the place. I just want to celebrate it really and this seemed like the best way of doing it.”
