Virgin’s Heathrow flights hailed as boost by Edinburgh politicians

POLITICIANS have welcomed a move by Sir Richard Branson’s airline, Virgin Atlantic, to launch flights from Edinburgh to London Heathrow.

Virgin plans to start flights from March 31 after winning short-haul slots which became available following the takeover of BMI by British Airways’ parent company, International Airline Group.

Edinburgh Western SNP MSP Colin Keir said: “This is a very welcome announcement that will bring competition on the routes, thus keeping prices down, which is fantastic news for passengers. The air links between Heathrow and Scotland are vital for our economy, with better links giving a huge boost for tourism and business.”

Edinburgh West Lib Dem MP Mike Crockart said: “There has been a great deal of legitimate concern about a lack of competition, and I am pleased that there will now be more than one carrier.”

Scottish Tory transport spokesman Alex Johnstone said it would also mean better deals for flying across the world because Virgin connects from Heathrow all across the globe.
