Volunteers sought to teach English

Have your say

STEVENSON College Edinburgh is on the lookout for volunteer tutors for a programme that helps city residents learn English as a second language.

As part of the English tutoring scheme, volunteers provide weekly lessons over a period of nine months to students who cannot attend community-based classes.

Judith Dean, who has been part of the programme for ten years, is just one of a group of tutors who help students learn the English language on a one-to-one basis in their own home.

The 72-year-old retired teacher for blind and physically handicapped children, who lives on the south side of the city, said: “If you are enthusiastic, love to help and feel that you have the empathy and communication skills to talk to people, then I would readily encourage you to go for it.”

To find out more about becoming a tutor, book a place on an information session at Stevenson’s Leith campus on Friday or January 27.
