Now Brazilian-born singer Wagner Carrilho – known for his flamboyant performances on the show that left the judges in stitches – has given an Edinburgh painting and decorating business a major boost in a hilarious online video.

More than 13,000 people viewed his message on behalf of Liberton Decor within 24 hours of it going online.

And the Facebook message, in which the singer urges viewers – in his distinctive Brazilian accent – to head to Liberton Decor, “the best painters and decorators in Edinburgh”, has left rival businesses kicking themselves.

John Coats, director of Liberton Decor, said he was astonished by the response the quirky video has received since it was posted on Thursday.

He said: “I heard that he would sing birthday messages to his fans on Facebook, so I thought it might be an idea to ask him to sing a message for my business.

“I think it’s the first time he’s done something like that – and I can’t believe how it’s turned out. To think 13,000 people now know about us because of Wagner is crazy.”

Once John had persuaded Wagner to take on the task, he told him what he wanted him to say and organised for him to wear a Liberton Decor bodywarmer and pose while holding a paintbrush.

During the 45-second video, Wagner smiles broadly while encouraging viewers to head to Liberton Decor for “private, commercial and insurance work”.

“I wasn’t sure if he’d go for it, but he was a great sport,” added John. “I asked him to sing La Bamba as well.”

The entertainer is one of the ITV talent show’s most memorable contestants. He appeared in 2010 and kept viewers entertained with his colourful dance routines and distinctive accent.

He made it to the eighth week before being voted off.

Wagner said he had particularly enjoyed the Liberton Decor performance. He said: “I love performing and every video is a performance as it involves some acting. My videos keep me in touch with my fans, who are people I don’t know but in a way become virtual friends as soon as they contact me.”
