Wallaby leaps back into limelight after zoo blaze

A WALLABY will return to public view today after suffering smoke inhalation in a fire at Edinburgh Zoo.

The six-year-old male swamp wallaby, named Barega, was overcome after a fire at his temporary enclosure on Tuesday.

The marsupial was rescued by keepers and treated overnight in the attraction’s animal hospital before being released into a private enclosure yesterday.

After a further period of observation, he will rejoin the attraction’s six other swamp wallabies today.

The zoo’s Stuart Jenkinson said Barega had “totally recovered”.

Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

Visitors alerted staff when they saw smoke coming from the enclosure at 4.30pm. Keepers rescued the wallaby, who was the only animal inside, and gave him treatment for smoke inhalation.
