Warning over mouth cancer

THE vast majority of Capital residents are unaware of the symptoms of mouth cancer, a study has found. Simplyhealth’s Annual Dental Survey 2012 revealed that 70 per cent of people in Edinburgh didn’t know what to look for.

Symptoms include an ulcer that won’t heal, a lump and difficulty in chewing. Across Britain, three per cent of respondents said they believed kissing could increase chances of developing mouth cancer.

Dentist Michael Thomassaid: “I’d encourage everyone to utilise their time in the dentist’s chair and speak up should they have any questions about mouth cancer.”
