Watch out for badgers

Drivers are being warned to beware of badgers on the road after a spate of the animals were killed in the Lothians.

A total of 17 have been run over in Edinburgh this year, 17 in West Lothian, 20 in Midlothian and three in East Lothian.

Across Scotland, 327 have been reported dead on the roads in recent weeks.

The increase in badger deaths is due to the animals becoming more mobile during the mating season.

Ian Hutchison, of the Scottish Badger Trust, said: “If you see a badger lying dead in the road, it’s probably a badger crossing, so be careful.”
