A CONTRACEPTIVE pill which can be taken nearly a week after unprotected sex, could be given over the counter in Scotland to reduce unwanted teenage pregnancies.

The Scottish government has set up an expert group to look into whether the drug, ellaOne, could help cut one of Europe’s highest teenage pregnancy rates.

Professor Anna Glasier, an expert in reproductive medicine at Edinburgh University who tested the pill, previously warned it could lead to delays in women visiting their doctor. A Scottish government spokesman said they would consider the evidence.
