A woman who was hit by a car at Stenhouse Cross on Monday night is now in a critical condition.

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to the accident, which happened at around 8.20pm.

The 56-year-old woman was struck on a zebra crossing by a Vauxhall Corsa travelling north on Stenhouse Drive.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but she was later transferred to the Western General Hospital where she is considered to be in a critical condition.

The road was closed for more than three hours to allow accident investigations to take place.

The 39-year-old woman who was driving the car stopped at the scene, however police are keen to speak to anyone else who witnesses the crash.

Sergeant Alan Stewart said: “We are eager to establish exactly what happened and our thoughts are with the female pedestrian’s family at what must be a difficult time.”

Those who may have witnessed the incident are asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
